structural engineering

In its simplest form, structural engineering is the reason why buildings don’t fall down. Structural engineering is the design of the beams, columns, footings etc. (building skeleton) which support the building and its anticipated use.

With a background in both geotechnical and structural engineering we have an established expertise in foundation design. Our geotechnical background allows us to evaluate how the soils at the site will perform when loaded. Our structural background allows us to calculate the maximum anticipated loads that will be transferred to the foundation. Combining our geotechnical and structural background allows us to design the appropriate foundation system for the soil conditions.

We also provide residential structural engineering. We can perform structural analysis and design for load bearing wall removals, large exterior sliding doors and windows, residential additions, and new construction.

Our structural design services typically consist of:

  • Review of architectural plans to determine the proposed construction.
  • Site visit to determine existing layout of structural framing
  • Structural analysis - Gravity – This is an analysis of the vertical loads that are placed on a structure
  • Structural analysis - Lateral  – This is an analysis of horizontal loads that are placed on a structure. Typically wind and seismic loads.
  • Structural Plans: Foundation Plan, Framing Plans, Roof Framing Plan
  • Structural Details: Connection Details, Shear Transfer Details, Common Connections
  • Structural Notes
